Nick Kyrgios suggests he is still not feeling his best but highlighted he is working hard on making a successful return. In the offseason, Kyrgios sustained a knee injury that forced him to withdraw from the United Cup, Adelaide 2 and Australian Open.
After withdrawing from the Australian Open, Kyrgios decided to surgically address his knee injury. Kyrgios was aiming to return at the French Open but he sustained a foot injury during the theft of his car in Australia.
“Not gonna lie… this has been a f—— grind. To get back after one of the best seasons of ANY tennis player last year. I don’t feel like myself, but I’m still trying,” Kyrgios wrote on his Instagram Story.
Kyrgios to return during the grass season?
For weeks, the general expectation has been that Kyrgios targets the grass season to return to action. Just before the start of the French Open, Thanasi Kokkinakis – who is Kyrgios’ close friend – revealed that the 2022 Wimbledon finalist is aiming to play again at the start of the grass season.
“I think the plan for him is to be ready for Wimbledon and play a few lead-ins. Stuttgart (June 12-18) was up there, I think. I’m not sure if he’s going to Queen’s or Halle (both June 19-25), but hopefully he’s ready. By all accounts, his recovery has been a bit slower than he thought, but I think he’s on the mend now and it’s looking positive for the grass,” Kokkinakis told the Australian Associated Press before the start of the French Open.
Last year, Kyrgios enjoyed a great grass season. During the 2022 grass season, Kyrgios made back-to-back semifinals in Stuttgart and Halle. After deep runs in Stuttgart and Halle, Kyrgios made his first Grand Slam singles final at Wimbledon before losing to Novak Djokovic in four sets. It remains to be seen how well can Kyrgios do on the grass this year.
